Seventeen-year-old Cassie has a natural ability of being able to read people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. It’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously until an FBI agent approaches her and invites her to become a part of a unique program; a program that trains and uses teenagers with special abilities to crack cold cases.
Cassie quickly realizes that her new home isn’t especially comfortable or inviting. Michael can read emotions, Lia can tell if people are lying and is an exceptional liar herself, Megan does better with the mathematical pattern of blood patterns than she does with connecting with people, and though Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, he’s brooding and cold.
It soon becomes clear that in order to protect herself, Cassie will be working more than just cold cases and she’s not quite sure who she should trust.
Whoa! The Naturals was intense and I blew through it. Barnes did a great job of giving the reader clues about who the killer was, but not too many that it was predictable. There were certainly surprises at the end, but they weren’t so surprising that they weren’t buyable. I liked Cassie’s character and though I’m not a crime novel fanatic, I’ll definitely read the next book in the series. I think CSI buffs will love The Naturals.
Parent’s guide:
- Sex: Some kissing between a boy and girl
- Language: mild
- Violence: discussion about crime scenes, people are murdered, a couple of disturbing descriptions of murder from the viewpoint of serial killer, teens in a life-threatening situation, mild gun violence

Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But, it's not a skill that she's ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they've begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.
What Cassie doesn't realize is that there's more at risk than a few unsolved homicides-especially when she's sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own. Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms close. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.
Think The Mentalist meets Pretty Little Liars-Jennifer Lynn Barnes's The Naturals is a gripping psychological thriller with killer appeal, a to-die-for romance, and the bones of a gritty and compelling new series.
