2013 A to Z Challenge: Letter F = Fancy Nancy
Have you met Fancy Nancy? She’s a pretty popular gal amongst the little girl circles, and in my opinion, for good reason.
She’s a red head, that tells you something. But more importantly, she loves everything that’s embellished, chic, and sparkly. She also has a propensity towards going a little bit over-the-top. Thankfully she’s surrounded by a wonderful family that always helps her find her way when she goes a little off course, or lends her a helping hand, and they are always the first people to forgive and love her when she’s done something wrong.
One of my favorite things about the Fancy Nancy books is the way in which they teach vocabulary to young readers/listeners. While describing everyday objects that most kids already have the vocabulary comprehension for, Fancy Nancy takes those common words and put a fancy spin on them. For example, in Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy, the book begins with Fancy Nancy saying, “I am ecstatic. (That’s a fancy word for happy.)”
The Fancy Nancy books began as picture books, but they have branched out into the easy reader market and most recently, chapter books. Since my oldest isn’t quite there yet, I haven’t checked them out, but considering how much I like the picture books, I’d say it’s worth looking into if you’ve got girls at those reading levels.
The Fancy Nancy books are written by Jane O’Connor and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser.
My four year old LOVES Fancy Nancy. Which reminds me, we need to go to the library again soon.
Love the book/character-themed A-Z posts!
Ah…the library. A well source of books I could never afford to read at cover price…love it.
I always liked books that taught lessons and words to little ones. I’ve read quite a few to mine. My son is now 18 and we were talking about books to get for my niece’s two little girls and he still remembers some I read him. 🙂
I love Fancy Nancy! She has such an awesome personality, and her fashion sense — yes, I think I went through the all-things sparkly phase, too. It’s something that resonates with a lot of people.
Nickie: especially little girl people.
